Dentofacial Orthopedics

Before we started concentrating on the muscles with Myofunctional Orthodontics, we tried to work with the growing jaws. While there are limitations to this approach, it does have the advantage of requiring less cooperation from the patient and parent since there are no exercises to be done.

We will choose this approach as an alternative to the full-face approach of Myofunctional, on the one hand, and as a way of avoiding extraction/retraction orthodontics, on the other. Watch this video by Dr. Paul Coceancig to explain:

Dento-facial orthopedics can make the upper jaw wider, and it can help to bring the lower jaw forward to some degree. The reason this is SO important is that it at least maintains adequate room for the tongue, while extractions or retraction of the front teeth takes away room for the tongue. Our fear is that retraction will "lock in" the problems that will lead to later Sleep Disordered Breathing (more here)

orthodontist-clifton-nj-new-jerseyWe thank our patients for the trust they have put in our orthodontics practice the past 30 years (60 years if you include my Dad and Elaine).
I hope this website earns their trust again.
